Keyboard shortcuts

Every common action has a shortcut, and you can remap all of them. Templates match the keys you already know from other readers.

Updated

If you drive Newsbin from a keyboard, most of what you do every day has a shortcut: refreshing, filtering, marking a list as read, opening an article in your browser. All of them can be remapped in Settings → Shortcuts on Mac, iPad, and iPhone with a hardware keyboard. Your choices sync across devices through iCloud.

Start from a template

Coming from another reader? Pick a template and keep your muscle memory. Newsbin ships with presets for Feedbin, Feedly, Inoreader, NetNewsWire, and Reeder, alongside the stock Newsbin set. A template swaps in that app’s familiar keys, like k to mark all as read from NetNewsWire, or v to open the original article from Feedly.

If you’ve customized any shortcuts, switching templates asks first, since applying a preset replaces your edits.

The default shortcuts

Action Shortcut
Refresh ⌘R
Update full article cache ⇧⌘R
Mark list as read ⌘K
Select all articles ⌘A
Open in browser ⌘B
Open in new window (Mac) ⌥⌘O
Add feed ⌘N
Add folder ⇧⌘F
Add smart group ⌘G
Import OPML file ⌘I
Edit tags ⌘T
Clear active tags ⇧⌘T
Unreads only ⇧⌘U
All articles ⇧⌘A
View as list / small / large thumbnails ⌘1 / ⌘2 / ⌘3

A few actions (like exporting OPML and archiving) ship without a shortcut. Assign them anything you like.

Changing a shortcut

  1. Open Settings → Shortcuts.
  2. Click the pencil next to an action. The row shows Type shortcut.
  3. Press the keys you want. Single letters work too, so r for refresh is fair game.

Press Escape to cancel, or Backspace to remove the shortcut entirely (the action shows None until you give it a new one).

If you pick a combination another action is already using, the new assignment wins and the old action drops to None. Its reset button brings it right back if that wasn’t what you meant.

Resetting

Each row has a reset arrow that returns that one action to the template’s key. Reset at the top of the panel does the same for everything at once, scoped to whichever template you’re on.

Tips

While you’re recording a shortcut, Newsbin suspends its own bindings so the keys you press get captured instead of triggering the action. And since shortcuts ride along with iCloud sync, a remap on your Mac shows up on your iPad without any extra steps. Apple Watch doesn’t use keyboard shortcuts, so nothing changes there.
